(1). A young man sees a sunset and, unable to understand or to express the emotion that it rouses in him, concludes that it must be the gateway to a world that lies beyond.

年轻人观看日落时由于不能理解或者无法表达眼前美景在他心中激起的情感,于是断言,日落处一定是通向另一世界的大门。

(2). It is difficult for any of us in moments of intense aesthetic experience to resist the suggestion that we are catching a glimpse of a light that shines down to us from a different realm of existence, different and, because the experience is intensely moving, in some way higher.

我们每一个人在领略强烈美感的时刻都不禁会产生一种联想，似乎我们瞥见了另一个不同世界照射在我们身上的光芒，那个世界迥然不同，而且因为这种美的感受强烈动人，所以在某些方面又显得更为高尚。

(3). And, though the gleams blind and dazzle, yet do they convey a hint of beauty and serenity greater than we have known or imagined.

尽管这光芒耀目得使人睁不开眼睛,但它实实在在地带来了我们从未感受过或无法想象到的美和宁静的启示。

(4). Greater too than we can describe, for language, which was invented to convey the meanings of this world, cannot readily be fitted to the uses of another.

我们无法描绘这种静谧的美．因为人们创造出语言是用来表达这个世界上的各种意义的,它很难适用于另一个世界。

(5). That all great art has this power of suggesting a world beyond is undeniable.

不可否认,一切伟大的艺术都具有一种联想天外世界的能力。

(6). In some moods Nature shares it. There is no sky in June so blue that it does not point forward to a bluer, no sunset so beautiful that it does not waken the vision of a greater beauty, a vision which passes before it is fully glimpsed, and in passing leaves an indefinable longing and regret.

在某些状态下大自然也有这种能力。6月的穹苍不会蓝得不能再蓝，6月的日落不会美得胜过迷人的幻景。这种幻景的迷人之处在于它未及完全展现即行消逝，给人留下一种说不清的渴望和惆怅。

(7). If we glimpse the unutterable, it is unwise to try to utter it, nor should we seek to invest with significance that which we cannot grasp. Beauty in terms of our human meanings is meaningless.

如果我们看到不可言传的东西而硬要把它说出来,这是不明智的,我们也不应该给我们所不了解的东西寻找一个意义。用人类的语言来解释美,美就成为毫无意义了。
