(1). In l858, a French engineer, De Gamond, arrived in England with a plan for a twenty-one mile tunnel across the English Channel.

1858年，一位法国工程师DeGamond带着一份横穿英吉利海峡全长二十一英里的隧道规划到达英国。

(2). He said that it would be possible to build a platform in the center of the Channel.

他说有可能在海峡的中心建一座平台。

(3). This platform would serve as a port and a railway station.

(4). The tunnel would be well ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level.

(5). In 1860, an Englishman, William Low, put a better plan forward.

(7). Forty-two years later a tunnel was actually begun.
