(1). Last Christmas, the circus owner, Jimmy Gates, decided to take some presents to a children’s hospital.

去年圣诞节，马戏团老板JimmyGates决定给一所儿童医院送些礼物去。

(2). Dressed up as Father Christmas and accompanied by a ’guard of honor’ of six pretty girls, he set off down the main street of the city riding a baby elephant called Jumbo.

他装扮成圣诞老人，由六个漂亮的姑娘组成仪仗队伴送，骑上一头名叫Jumbo的小象从城里的大街上出发了。

(3). He should have known that the police would never allow this sort of thing.

他本该知道警察是不允许这样做的。

(4). A policeman approached Jimmy and told him he ought to have gone along a side street as Jumbo was holding up the traffic.

一位警察前来对吉姆说，他们应该走小巷，因为Jumbo有碍交通。

(5). Though Jimmy agreed to go at once, Jumbo refused to move.

虽然Jimmy答应马上走开，可是Jumbo却不愿意动。

(6). Fifteen policemen had to push very hard to get him off the main street.

十五名警察费了好大的劲才把它推离大道。

(7). The police had a difficult time, but they were most amused.

警察累得要命，可是他们都觉得很有趣。

(8). ’Jumbo must weigh a few tons,’ said a policeman afterwards, ’so it was fortunate that we didn’t have to carry him. Of course, we should arrest him, but as he has a good record, we shall let him off this time.’

一名警察后来说:“Jumbo大概有好几吨重，侥幸的是，我们还不必抬它走。当然，我们应该逮捕它，但是，由于它过去的表现还不坏，这次就放它过去了。”
