(1). I was being tested for a driving license for the third time. I had been asked to drive in heavy traffic and had done so successfully.
为了取得驾驶执照,我正在接受三次考试。我被要求在繁忙的马路上驾驶,我开得相当成功。
(2). After having been instructed to drive out of town, I began to acquire confidence. Sure that I had passed, I was almost beginning to enjoy my test.
当叫我将车驶出城外时,我开始有了信心,相信自己已经通过了,我差不多就要开始为这次考试感到得意了。
(3). I continued driving and after some time, the examiner tapped loudly.
我继续开车,过了一些时候,主考官重重地敲车窗。
(4). Though the sound could be heard clearly, it took me a long time to react.
虽然声音听得很清楚,可我过了好一会才反应过来。
(5). The examiner must have been pleased with my performance, for he smiled and said, ’Just one more thing, Mr. Eames. Let us suppose that a child suddenly crosses the road in front of you. As soon as I tap on the window, I want the car to be stopped immediately.’
主考官一定对我的驾驶技巧很满意,因为他微笑着对我说:“Eames先生,就只剩下一项了,现在假设一个小孩突然在你面前穿过马路,只要我一敲车窗,你就要立刻停车。”
(6). I suddenly pressed the brake pedal hard and we were both thrown forward.
我突然使劲踩脚闸,结果我俩都向前一冲。
(7). The examiner looked at me sadly. ’Mr. Eames,’ he said, in a mournful voice,’ you have just killed that child!’
主考官无可奈何地看着我,“Eames先生,”他用有点悲哀的声调说,“你刚才已把那个小孩压死了!”
