(1). Six men have been trapped in a mine for seventeen hours.
六个人困在矿井里已达十七个小时之久。
(2). If they are not brought to the surface soon they may lose their lives.
如果不能立即把他们救出地面,他们就会丧生。
(3). However, rescue operations are proving difficult.
但救援工作进行得很不顺利。
(4). If explosives are used, vibrations will cause the roof of the mine to collapse.
若是用爆破方法,震动会使矿井的顶部倒塌。
(5). Rescue workers are therefore drilling a hole on the north side of the mine. They intend to bring the men up in a special capsule.
所以救援人员就在矿井的北边钻孔,打算用特制容器将他们吊上来。
(6). If there had not been a hard layer of rock beneath the soil, they would have completed the job in a few hours.
如果土壤下面没有坚硬的岩石,他们早就在几个小时内完成这项工作了。
(7). As it is, they have been drilling for sixteen hours and they still have a long way to go.

(8). Meanwhile, a microphone, which was lowered into the mine two hours ago, has enabled the men to keep in touch with the closest relatives.

(9). Though they are running out of food and drink, the men are cheerful and confident that they will get out soon.
