(1). A pilot noticed a balloon which seemed to be making for a Royal Air Force Station nearby.

一位飞行员注意到有一个气球似乎朝着附近的皇家空军基地飞去。

(2). He informed the station at once, but no one there was able to explain the mystery.

他立刻向该基地报告，但基地里的人都不能解释这个奥秘。

(3). The officer in the control tower was very angry when he heard the news, because balloons can be a great danger to aircraft.

控制塔里的军官听到这个消息很生气，因为气球对飞机有很大的威胁。

(4). He said that someone might by spying on the station and the pilot was ordered to keep track of the strange object.

他说可能有人正在窥测空军基地，于是命令这位飞行员跟踪这个怪物。

(5). The pilot managed to circle the balloon for some time.

飞行员设法绕着气球转了好一会。

(6). He could make out three men in a basket under it and one of them was holding field glasses.

他观察到气球下面的篮子里有三个人，其中一个拿着一副双筒望远镜。

(7). When the balloon was over the station, the pilot saw one of the men taking photographs.

当气球飞至空军基地上空时，他发现其中的一个正在拍照。

(8). Soon afterwards, the balloon began to descend and it landed near an airfield.

(9). The police were called in, but they could not arrest anyone, for the basket contained two Members of Parliament and the Commanding Officer of the station!

警察被唤来了，但他们不能逮捕任何人，因为篮子里有两位是国会议员和一位基地的指挥官!

(10). As the Commanding Officer explained later, one half of the station did not know what the other half was doing!

后来基地的指挥官解释说，本基地的这一半的工作人员不知道另一半工作人员在干什么。
