[2]威廉·柯伯（William Cowper，1731—1800），诗人。出生于赫里福德的一个牧师家庭，6岁丧母，童年时生活不幸。毕业于一所私立学校，后来精神失常，几度想自杀，被送进精神病院治疗。治愈出院后寄住牧师摩莱·安温家。安温两年后去世，其妻玛丽继续无微不至地照顾他。在玛丽的鼓励下开始诗歌创作，主要作品有《约翰·吉尔宾》《任务》《亚德利的橡树》等。
